Avoid “Disk full” errors while in a job

Despite good planning, it is very common to run out of disk space in the middle of a big project. When facing this situation, many will simply connect and format an additional drive to keep working, realizing full well that spreading files across multiple locations inevitably leads to confusion, broken links and archiving challenges. To prevent this, some will backup their files; reformat a larger volume; then restore everything. But copying Terabytes of data can take days. Learn how Tiger Technology poolIt can help you expand your disk’s capacity on the fly and without affecting your existing files or applications.

Just “pool it”

poolIt is a new and affordable software tool that lets you pool multiple disks into a single namespace. Simply connect new disks (or RAID) to your workstation (Windows or Mac OS) and format them using standard disk utilities. Instead of writing content to this new volume, simply "pool" it with your original one. Within seconds, all the additional free space becomes available to your project. poolIt does not temper with your drives. It conceals them behind a thin software layer.

A unified workspace

When accessing the pool, you are presented with a “logical merge” of all the volumes it contains (aka pool members). This means that files stored on two different volumes having an identical folder structure will appear as if they were stored in one and the same place.

Non-destructive, fast and safe for your data

With poolIt, you can dynamically add or remove physical disks from your pool at any time, making it easy to grow or shrink the total storage size. poolIt does not move files unless it is instructed to do so. Add a drive to the pool, and all the files and free space it contains become part of the pool. Detach a drive and all the files and free space it contains disappear from the pool. Nothing gets lost. Files are still on the drive and can be accessed from any computer or reconnected back to the pool. To ensure total data integrity, all accesses to the physical drives (aka pool members) are carried using the operating system’s functions. In addition, there is no visible performance hit.

No more broken links

poolIt offers all the tools you need to explore your storage pool’s content. You can schedule or manually migrate files from one pool member to another. These migrations do not affect users or applications, as file paths remain unchanged. This lets you easily manage individual file location and consolidate content prior to releasing a pool member so it can be reused somewhere else in the facility. Your applications will never complain about broken links.

Each file in its place

When writing new files to the pool, simple policies are used to decide where files will get stored. By default, poolIt writes new files to the top priority pool member until it gets near-full, at which point it starts writing to the next pool member, and so on. But poolIt also lets you realize substantial savings by ensuring a better match between the type of storage and the value of your data. Smarter policies, such as “File-type”, can be used to discriminate target destination based on file type. For instance, it might be a good idea to store media files on a fast RAID while storing projects, documents and web downloads on a slower drive.

Better manage your storage resources

When you’re done completing a big project, chances are you will want to repurpose some of your storage resources somewhere else. You can simply instruct poolIt to “Release” one of its members. All the data contained on this physical drive will be copied onto the remaining members (presuming there is enough space) before being released from the pool. At this point, the drive is empty, mounted on the desktop and ready to be used somewhere else.

Affordable and easy to use

Keeping up with storage growth is a big concern for small and large organizations alike. With its patent pending technology, poolIt is the first virtualization software tool designed to work with existing storage infrastructures and file systems.

With poolIt you can:

  • Combine multiple volumes into a single pool
  • Easily expand capacity of your existing volumes
  • Migrate data from one storage device to another transparently
  • Implement tiered storage for better matching the type of data with the available resources
  • Make use of all the available space distributed across your multiple volumes
  • Keep recently used files locally but transfer aging files on remote servers
  • Create very large volumes safely and easily
  • Easily move and repurpose storage resources within your facility
